Craftcamp kids Summer craft workshops with Gabby O'Connor

$25 per child per session – morning/afternoon tea included [please indicate any allergies when enrolling]

All workshops teach basic craft skills to the beginners and extend those who are more experienced.

Materials provided are all recycled where possible.

make badges, brooches, bangles or necklaces out fabric remnants

* stationery

make and embellish note books, cards and envelopes using recycled papers [ no sewing!]

sew a simple draw string pencil or sunglasses case or two!

* summer softies

do softies know how to swim and surf? Of course they do! Lets make a soft toy out of recycled fabric and embellish it – summer styles

Hello there 2012.

Sorry that it has taken me so long to get these pictures up.

I am only just recovering from Christmas and a New Year break!

Anyhow, check out these lovely pics [sorry about the low quality, forgot my camera on the first day and had to use my phone]....but the work and the kids were awesome! Fantastic Mini Softies Christmas decorations and awesome stamps, wrapping paper and cards and note books.

I hope the gifts were well received and that a well deserved break was had by all.

Mini sculptures 2 and Spring Softies 2

What a busy and awesome day we had. A hive of activity and innovation as per usual and lots of impressive self sufficiency too. I love my job!

We had a full class in the morning with mini sculptures and there was a beautiful and impressive array of creations from animals to skateboards and kinetic sculptures and all sorts in between!

In the afternoon we had the biggest but most beautifully behaved group of crafters. Thank you guys for your patience and to Vanessa and Tessa for dropping by and helping thread needles, do knots and solve crafty problems. Thanks again to Clare at Mandatory for the inspiring fabric samples that we repurpose in these workshops.

Self Portrait Softies and Mini Sculptures

Sorry for the delay in posting. This was such a super day. It was the first time for self portrait softies and boy was I so proud and excited by all the results. We began by drawing pictures of ourselves, then I helped copy the head shape and once sewn together and stuffed, the kids selected the fabric for the facial features and cut them based on their drawings. Great stuff!

Next up we had the mini sculptures workshop where we used leftover materials from my studio as well as ice block sticks and match sticks and trusty old glue guns. Some fantastic results from houses, cars and leaning towers to abstract sculptures and sun temples. Brilliant!

Spring Softies 2011_1

Oh my, what a lovely start to the Spring holiday season of Craftcamp.

For the first session we had a lovely buzzing and very creative group of 12 who all produced fantastic birds using the lovely fabrics donated by Mandatory - Thanks Clare! And thanks to the craftcamp kids for their focus and creativity. You all rock!

Again in the afternoon session it was a hive of activity made all the more lovely with the kids singing beautiful waiata while stitching their highly original softies. Such a happy class - thanks guys.

To finish off the Winter holiday workshops we had a full day class making large soft toys.

The kids designed their own softies, drawing first and then turned the drawing into a template, chose and cut the fabric and got sewing. I also brought my sewing machine in to help strengthen the seams, but the bulk of the work was done by hand.

Such great work guys - we will be running this one again next holidays!

Thanks again to Mandatory for the great fabric off cuts and to all the kids and parents who make this all happened.

Today we had a lovely big group of very focused crafty kids. After choosing the fabrics and the template starting point, the room was very quiet full of busy making. The lovely Eloise helped with the class which was great too. Check out the Rock'n Roll attitude! So much fun.

For this workshop the aim was to make tiny sculptures or ones that you can wear- I brought in some models from my big exhibition at the City Gallery and lots of materials that I had been holding on to for this very occasion. It was great to see the kids all get into the zone of making. It was a very quiet class in the most lovely way - everyone was too busy making! Great work guys.

For the first paper sculpture workshop we had a lovely tiny class and made lots of lovely work.

I brought some small LED lights in for the students to test their work on - illumination is magic! Go May and James!

Wow, what a way to finish the Easter Holiday workshop series. We had a super team of 6 girls and 6 boys in our Original Softies session and thanks to my special helper Tess, we had a very smooth sailing super crafty session.

We had a super skeleton sculpture session on Thursday afternoon. Some very impressive inventiveness and some very prolific making. I love how you guys can always surprise me with your ideas and solutions to problems. Go team!

Easter Holiday workshops Day 2: Sculptures and Easter Softies

Another cracking day of supreme craftiness. Again you guys impress me constantly with your enthusiasm, inventiveness...and originality. Thanks to all of you for working so hard, being so kind and thoughtful to each other - and thanks to Emma for the bandaids [we ran out after a few altercations with the hot glue gun]

So here are the pics for the 2nd Easter Softies workshop where we all started with an egg shape and ended up with monkeys, birds, mohawks, rabbits, chickens, jedi masters, pouches and combo creatures. Awesome! Following that, we had the skeleton sculpture class where using iceblock sticks and the trusty glue guns - some important lessons were learnt, ie: no multi tasking while hot glueing! But aside from that, we had a house, rabbit people, skull and crossbones, fish, starfish and people. Amazing stuff with lots of laughs and creative fun. Yay team!

Make a recycled fabric soft toy, learning basic sewing and embroidery skills, creating a friend or gift! If you've made one already - come along and make a friend, or a gift!

2.BIRD SOFTIES*new

Make a native NZ recycled fabric soft toy, learning basic sewing and embroidery skills, creating a friend or gift!

3.SPRING FABRIC BADGES / BROOCHES*new

Make recycled fabric badges or brooches, learning basic cutting and collaging skills inspired by NZ flora and fauna.

4.BIRD SCULPTURE*new

Make a native NZ bird sculpture out of recycled plastic shopping bags and fabric [no sewing]!
