SOFT JEWELLERY AT THE DOWSE

Last Saturday in amongst preparations for a big project that I am working on in Christchurch, I ran some Soft Jewellery classes at the Dowse for kids and their caregivers. It was hard to tell who was having more fun, but the general consensus is there needs to be a grown ups only version of the class. Watch this space!
Firstly we went to visit the Wunderruma jewellery exhbition for inspiration. We talked about the different types of materials we thought the works were made of and how they were transformed to make amazing jewellery. We also got to talk about what jewellery was and what it could be. The Wunderruma exhibition was quite liberating for the kids, completely opening up the possibilities and perceptions. We couldn't stay long pondering the works though as kids exclaimed that they were inspired and ready to get to the class room. I showed examples and demonstrated how we could make a necklace using rope and cable ties as a starting point and then they hopped to it. Eventually we then made something to go on the necklace. Many made a brooch that could also be pinned to the necklace as an amulet.
Anyhow, here are the pictures...I have to get back to work!
And one of the students made me a brooch that I have been wearing proudly - thanks so much everyyone for your efforts
