SOFT JEWELLERY AT THE DOWSE

Last Saturday in amongst preparations for a big project that I am working on in Christchurch, I ran some Soft Jewellery classes at the Dowse for kids and their caregivers. It was hard to tell who was having more fun, but the general consensus is there needs to be a grown ups only version of the class. Watch this space!
Firstly we went to visit the Wunderruma jewellery exhbition for inspiration. We talked about the different types of materials we thought the works were made of and how they were transformed to make amazing jewellery. We also got to talk about what jewellery was and what it could be. The Wunderruma exhibition was quite liberating for the kids, completely opening up the possibilities and perceptions. We couldn't stay long pondering the works though as kids exclaimed that they were inspired and ready to get to the class room. I showed examples and demonstrated how we could make a necklace using rope and cable ties as a starting point and then they hopped to it. Eventually we then made something to go on the necklace. Many made a brooch that could also be pinned to the necklace as an amulet.
Anyhow, here are the pictures...I have to get back to work!
And one of the students made me a brooch that I have been wearing proudly - thanks so much everyyone for your efforts

Craftcamp December workshops 2013

Hello Craftcampers and friends of Craftcamp.
Craftcamp is back for a final workshop season for 2013, Dec 18, 19 & 20.
For this final workshop season we are changing venues.
We will be running the workshops in studio 29 at Toi Poneke Arts Centre, 61-69 Abel Smith st, Te Aro, Wellington.
Take the lift to level 2 and turn left.
However, I will meet everyone in the foyer 15 minutes before the workshops begin.

I have designed the 6 different workshops so that the craftcamp kids can make meaningful gifts or decorations for the holiday season or just some cool stuff for themselves in a fun and relaxed environment.
All workshops are limited to 10 students and are for the beginner to more advanced craftcamper aged between 5-14. I will adapt the projects depending on the skill levels of individuals and students are welcome to make as many items as they are inspired to.
Many students stay for the whole day. As long as they come with a packed lunch [and you let me know] , I will be there to supervise.

Please email me for more information or to reserve your child's place in a workshop.

In other news, I have an installation as part of an exhibition called The Leading Edge at the National Library of New Zealand in Molesworth st. The work titled Order Structure Pattern #2 has been made from 200 metres of extension cord and rope and 4000 cable ties! http://natlib.govt.nz/visiting/wellington/leadingedge
It will be on for the next 11 months, so please, if you get a chance, go and have a look. The greater exhibition looks at fantastic inventions and design that has come out of NZ. Something for everyone.

Thanks again for your support of craftcamp and by recommending the workshops to your friends and family and for attending my workshops and exhibitions.

Kindest regards,
Gabby O'Connor

Craftcamp Winter 2013

An awesome day today with the craftcampers.
This morning we had good old softies workshop where we got out the trusty old templates and the kids then got designing their own versions. Some really great results - tooth pillows [complete with pockets for fangs], overfed robots, dogs, dollies and other lovely and strange creatures.

Then we had the the very first amazing plants and flowers workshop where we first looked at and discussed the components of flowers. Then we observed and drew real flowers and then made our own with wire, coloured masking tape, card, paper and other random bits and pieces.
So much beautiful work. I managed to have a moment to document some of the process too.
May [the maker of the above work] missed out on the team photo as she was too engrossed in making. What awesome making it was!

Craftcamp Summer - all day softies!

The first workshop for 2013 was just wonderful! An amazing group of craftcampers who made a fantastic collection of softies. We had the Big Bang in softie form by Eli, a bunch of self portrait softies by Tuhina, Isla and Ruby. A koala, a unicorn, a squirrel and a girl. Just magnificent! I love my job!!! Thanks to local Wellington businesses Mandatory Menswear, Kowtow and Starfish for the wonderful fabric remnants.
